Contents Page Annotation

Yes, the magazine conveys the contents page with many images to show different articles within the magazine to give a foreshadowing preview to the magazine. The images have been laid out in a way that makes the contents come across as abstract in a paradigmatic way to make the images more noticeable. In total the contents shows 9 images from articles that follow in the magazine. This shows the magazine different things to attract all the audiences widening the range of the target audience.

The main colours used with in the page are white black and red which are the magazines known colours, mainly because red is seen as a fiery colour to attract attention and because it could mean fiery gossip. The images relate to the front cover by having the front cover on the page with all main things in bold writing like the subheadings on the front cover developing a glamorous theme within the magazine of being gossip related but glamorous at the same time.

The contents is arrange with images to show the different articles appealing to many different target audiences and is arrange with big bold black writing to indicate the articles on each page. This shows the magazine has a lot within it containing a lot of information, gossip and is filled full of stuff that the audience want to read. The contents is constructed very well here because it shows that the magazine has a lot to read to get the reader to buy it to show they get there moneys worth.

No, the magazine only shows pictures from articles in the magazine with mini reviews and incites into the articles within the magazine. In a way the only promotional thing shown is the promotional preview of the articles within the magazine.

The magazine logo is presented twice in its regular position of the top left corner as its trademark position. It does not represent any other logos to steal its limelight from the magazine. The magazine does promote other brand but not on the contents page they are shown generally at the back of the magazine. The trademark position of the logo does not really dominate the page but it is still recognisable to show you it is there to stand out.

Cheryl Cole Article Annotation

The article is about Cheryl Cole suggesting that it will appeal to men and pop and R&B listeners; because men read stuff about Cheryl Cole because of her appearance and pop and R&B listeners read the article as fans appealing those audiences on a syntagmatic level. However on a paradigmatic level it would appeal to woman who has been confused and feel lost with them relating to the situation and even some men.

The article is all written in Standard English that is all very formal, but there are more informal areas of the text when it is quoting Cheryl Cole because this is how she talks and its not in Standard English for example ‘I don’t know what I look like anymore. Do you know what I mean?’ Asking a question to the audience engaging the reader in conversation a less formal manner than normal.

The magazine article appeals to the readers as more of a fellow woman or a friend by asking questions to the audience and making it friendlier. It engages you into conversation and makes you think she is speaking to you one on one ‘I don’t know what I look like anymore. Do you know what I mean?’ This makes the reader feel engaged and important to get them to carry on reading.

The style of the text is presented in a 3 column spread like a typical magazine article with very basic font with anchored letters at the start of the mid-entry paragraph on the second column with a big C behind to gain attention to the article. The image is very glamorous implying the magazine is very glamorous and the costume of Cheryl Cole is chosen to attract the attention of men. The article is different from other interviews but very similar to other pages featuring Cheryl Cole.

The page is laid out in a 3 column spread on the page with an image taking up about a quarter of the page with text all above and next to the image. There is a lot of writing on the page reflecting it could be quite long winded article, but breaks it up with the picture and the entry point with the C. This shows the audience that it is not a question, question article because there are not any breaks in the paragraphs.

The image in the picture is used to show glamour to betray the magazine as a glamorous. The back drop of the magazine photo is really class and eye catching because it is full of massive buildings with bright lights showing big glamour to make Cheryl seem big and glamorous. The caption of the page is one that addresses the audience in a first person manner by asking a question directly to the audience in first person.

It matches the front cover in the way that it is trying to look glamorous and stand out with bright colours and eye catching fonts. The font however is different than the front cover and other articles as the other fonts are slightly bigger and of a different colour using very good syntagmatic to stand out on the page.

The article does not really require previous knowledge of Cheryl Cole because it is all about how she currently feels bad that she doesn’t know how she feels anymore or how she wears. It asks questions to do with current time to show that she is asking of the readers opinions of now rather than questions about her past.

Article Analysis

In the article the target audience will be mostly aimed at older people as adults and fans of the former band led zeppelin and people more into his more country yet rock set also soft American style which again is a big appeal to the older generations who would have looked up to Robert plant as child in led zeppelin.

In the article the magazines uses text that is also related to the older generations by saying what he said when he was younger he used to steal milk from doorsteps which is like recollection for the older generation because you don’t do that now but they might have done that when they were younger. The writing is very much so Standard English it is all in a very formal way but it speaks in past tense a lot and speaking in not so much an academic way.

In this particular article the reader is related to be like an informed fan because it talks about his past of being in led zeppelin and it talks about loads of former songs of his with the band and relates them to the songs on his current album and abut his duets on the album.

The font in the article is very plain and is very small about the size of 12 in what looks like times new roman with a few acceptations like the break up of writing in the middle of the article. Yes the font is the same size and font type as the other pages in the magazine with song names all wrote in italics. The interview is laid out in a 3 column spread with an entry in the middle of the columns, with the text going down and continuing in the next Colum.

The texts takes up one page and the image also takes up one page it is all laid out in a specific way going down and there is also another page with an image of Robert plant and a get to know him better page which is for the people who don’t know as much about Robert plant.

In the image Robert plant is playing a harmonica and is very into this playing and we can this showing he is in to music and that he is very passionate about it and that he is more for the older people with a hairstyle that was more popular in the 70s and a very hippie type clothed image. And the comment shows he is really into his music and it’s a beautiful thing to see.

The article relates the front cover quite well to match the olden theme of the article for the older fans who were moiré into led zeppelin and how that the band member rejected at return tour to focus on his solo work about how he is now independent.

Yes because it is mainly aimed at form led zeppelin fans and people who had knew him before but there is also a page to get to know him so you find out abut him and then you can related to the image and the article on the other side which is a good feature appealing to more target audiences who are reading the magazine.

Article Mock Up

The place I will be meeting the band Audacity is at drummer Alex Casey’s house to watch one of their rehearsals and interview and take pictures of them in mid rehearsal and get some action photos as well as some group photos and some mid shot photos of them. I will also go to the home of my other artist Jessica O’Brian a solo singer with an amazing voice for photographs and a one on one interview to find out what she likes and enjoys about singing.

The setting is in a loft of the band member with drums amps and guitars set up like the normal base of a unsigned band with lesser places to rehearse with a lot of snacks because they are a hungry bunch of teenagers with average lighting and equipment ready to rehearse for the first time.

The atmosphere is very nervous and kind of awkward as this is their first rehearsal nobody knows exactly how amazing the other is at their instruments or singing. There is also an atmosphere of optimism of how good the band could possibly be and who has learnt there songs in time and who has not learnt there songs in time.

Some of the band members are optimistic at the other talents, and some are worried that they or other members will not be as good as the other people in the band or weather others are not up to the same standard as expected or needed or even wanted. There is also a massive sense of hope especially from Tony Kousoulou the former of the band also the acoustic guitarist.

After going to a band rehearsal and learning the band a bit more I found out that, the band was already faced with a problem. The bass guitarist Jack Bowyer had dropped out of the band due to his commitments to school work and coursework. The band said that they were disappointed that Jack had dropped out of the band but they can understand his reason for doing so, as everyone at this age has a lot of work to do and some need more time than others, so they all agreed it was ok and let him go. The band has tried to compromise without the bass guitarist by giving lead guitarist to Grace I’Anson and band former Tony Kousoulou becoming the bass guitarist for the band. The issue was resolved very quickly and in a professional way. By the way I witnessed the band resolve this problem so easily showed me that this band has a lot of potential because of the trust and maturity they showed when faced by a problem. The band is currently looking for a new bass guitarist to save themselves time but will try to do without one and learn the parts themselves. In the rehearsal I was so kindly invited to watch the drummer and host for this rehearsal Alex Casey filled in on the electric guitar showing his musical qualities there as well.

The lead singer of the band Siobhan O’Board brought friend Charley Parr to the rehearsal to possibly be a backing singer for the band. At first Charley seemed really nervous and hesitant but when she started to so sing there was no stopping her and she slotted into the background quite nicely with her voice complementing the lead singer Siobhan’s different style of singing quite nicely. The reasons I say Siobhan’s style of singing is so different because she has a very distinguished voice but also a very articulate one. As quoted her voice is ‘unique and such higher quality English.’ The truths in this statement were evident with her voice being so polite and calm yet articulate it surely was unique.

The band hit upon one note which raised a debate within the rehearsal session, it was one of pure comedy as the girls of the band Siobhan and Grace stated that Tony and Alex’s clothes were not up to date and of the right style for their genre of alternative. This statement was immediately rivalled by Tony by proving the girls point by saying ‘All I wear is a shirt, jeans and converse!’ With his next statement he had clearly lost this debate when he said ‘what’s wrong with Primark it’s cheap.’ The girls laughed and it was settled rather to the disappointment of Tony that he was not that stylish and that his ‘style’ was not suitable for the bands genre. ‘The humour between this band is good at a young age because a lot bands split up because they are to serious’ said by Grace and agreed with by Siobhan, Tony and Alex. This band will go far if they just keep their feet on the ground and go on having fun its how all good bands start.

The bands next step to increasing fans and letting themselves be heard and get known was by making a Facebook musical page with the band’s name. After that I filmed two of their cover rehearsals so people could have a taster session into their rehearsal and feel part of the band. The band show a lot of enthusiasm towards music and being together this is something that’s shows they will go far because they just have fun but on a serious level.
